    Frequently asked questions

How do I find my evacuation zone?

Evacuation zones are managed by your state or county emergency management agency, not FEMA. Search '[your county] evacuation zone' or use the Know Your Zone tool in hurricane-prone states like Florida, Texas, and the Carolinas.

Which is more dangerous, wind or storm surge?

Storm surge causes the majority of hurricane fatalities — more than wind. Even Category 1 storms can produce devastating surge in vulnerable coastal areas. Evacuation orders exist to get people above and away from surge zones.

When does hurricane season start and end?

Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with peak activity late August through September. Eastern Pacific season runs May 15 to November 30. Prepare before hurricane watches are issued — supplies run out once a storm is named.
