How we make money.
Short version: affiliate links and tips. That's it.
GridPrepped is a passion project. It started because we wanted our own families to have a stronger preparedness grid in place, and once we'd done the work, it felt wrong to keep it to ourselves.
Two things bring in money today: commissions when you buy gear through our Amazon links, and voluntary tips from readers. Everything else on this page is still hypothetical, and we've labeled it that way. Every personal feature is free and staying free.
Affiliate commissions (Live today)
When we recommend gear like water filters, generators, or first aid kits, those links point to Amazon and they are affiliate links — we earn a small commission when you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. This is the main way GridPrepped pays for itself. We pick the gear first and add the link second: we only recommend things we'd actually use ourselves, and a commission never changes what we recommend or what order we recommend it in.
Reader tips (Live today)
There's a tip jar for people who want to chip in. It's one-time, no account needed, and it runs through Stripe's checkout — we never see your card details. Tips are voluntary and buy you nothing: no unlocked features, no removed limits, no different experience. Everyone gets the same GridPrepped. It also isn't tax-deductible, since we aren't a registered nonprofit.
Display ads (Not running any)
If the site ever grows enough to qualify for a respectable ad network, we might run a few unobtrusive display ads. Never in the middle of your emergency plan. Never autoplay video. Never inside your dashboard. If it would wreck the experience, it's not worth the nickels.
Newsletter sponsorships (None sold yet)
Someday, if the newsletter has a real audience, a relevant preparedness company might sponsor a section. Anything sponsored will be clearly labeled. We'll never let a sponsor write the editorial.
B2B services (Still aspirational)
Property managers, HOAs, franchises, and similar organizations genuinely need continuity planning and team readiness tools. If we can one day build something valuable enough that they'll pay for it, that's the revenue stream that would keep the personal side free. For now, it's just a hope and a roadmap.
What we won't do.
Even if the money shows up someday, some things stay off the table.
We don't sell your data.
Your zip code, plan answers, household details, and usage stay yours. Not sold to data brokers, insurers, advertisers, or anyone else. See the privacy policy for specifics.
Editorial independence.
We earn from affiliate links, and that relationship does not shape what we recommend. If something better exists without a commission, we'll still point you to the better thing.
Paywalls on personal features? Never.
Emergency planning shouldn't be a premium feature. Every household should be able to build a plan, track supplies, and get local hazard alerts without paying for it.
Why we're doing this.
Because prepared families are calmer families. Because the grid is less reliable than it used to be. Because a neighbor who's ready is worth more than any gadget. If the site helps you prep one corner of your life that wasn't ready yesterday, we're doing what we set out to do.
