    Your Phone Filters Out Most Severe-Storm Warnings

    Your phone only buzzes for the most extreme severe thunderstorms — not the golf-ball hail or 70 mph winds that wreck roofs. In a record storm year, that gap is worth closing.

    - Base warning: quarter sized hail at 1 inch, 58 mph winds. No WEA.

    Only about 10% of severe thunderstorms hit the "destructive" tag in a given year. The other 90% never touch your phone. So the storm that dents every car on the block and peels your shingles can come through without a sound. That's not a bug. That's the threshold doing its job.

    The gap is expensive

    Severe thunderstorms aren't a minor hazard. In 2020, 13 of the 22 costliest U.S. weather disasters were severe thunderstorm events. The most expensive thunderstorm in U.S. history, an $11 billion derecho across Iowa in August 2020, was straight line wind, not a tornado.

    Hail and wind do the damage quietly. No tornado level coverage, and per the WEA threshold, no tornado level alert. You end up with a gap between "a warning went out" and "you heard about it in time."
