No paywalls. No premium tiers. No upsells. Here's what changed and why.
Short version: every personal feature on GridPrepped is now free. Forever.
Plans, supply tracking, alerts, AI plan generation, friend sharing. All of it. No paywall. No premium tier. No "sign up for the trial." If you're a household trying to get a little more prepared, the site does what it does without asking you for a credit card.
We pulled out roughly 85 paywalls and gates this week to make it stick.
What's free now
Anything you'd reasonably call "personal preparedness."
• Build emergency plans. As many as you want. Print them, share them, hand them to your kid's school.
• Track supplies. What you have, what's expiring, what's missing. No artificial cap on items.
• Get local hazard alerts. Severe weather, FEMA risk data, and live threats tied to your zip code.
• Generate an AI plan. Tell us a few things about your household and we'll build you a personalized starter plan in about 30 seconds. Anonymous visitors get 3 per day with no account at all. Free accounts get unlimited.
• Add friends and share plans. New this week. Send a friend request, accept, and share an emergency plan with them. View-only by default, with the option to grant edit access if you want them to help maintain it. Help your parents, your siblings, your friends across town.
What's new this week
A few things shipped alongside the pivot.
The plan wizard. Three quick questions, then the AI builds you a starter plan you can use immediately. Live at gridprepped.com/plan. You don't even need an account to try it.
Friends and plan sharing. The old "Family Plan" tier is gone. In its place: real peer relationships. Send a request to a friend's email, they accept, and you can share emergency plans back and forth. Visibility-only by default, with an optional upgrade to co-edit if you want a friend or family member helping to maintain the plan.
Honest monetization page. We added gridprepped.com/how-we-make-money. The honest answer is: we don't make money yet. The page lays out where revenue might come from someday (affiliate gear links, modest display ads, B2B tools for businesses and HOAs) and what we will never do (sell your data, paywall personal features, let sponsors write the editorial).
Why we're doing this
Because preparedness shouldn't be a paywall.
Every household should be able to build a plan, track supplies, and know what threatens their area without paying a subscription. The grid is less reliable than it used to be. Severe weather is more frequent. A prepared neighbor is worth more than any gadget. If GridPrepped helps one family avoid a bad week, we've already done what we set out to do.
This is a passion project. One day it might earn its keep through affiliate gear recommendations, sponsored newsletter sections, and tools we build for businesses, HOAs, and property managers. That's where revenue lives. Personal users are not the product, never will be.
What's coming
A few things on the near horizon:
• Real product screenshots on the homepage to replace the icon grids. The site does more than the marketing currently shows.
• A working tip jar. The "Support GridPrepped" link in the footer points to the contact form for now, while we set up Buy Me A Coffee or similar. If you find the site useful and want to chip in for hosting and AI credits, we'd appreciate it.
• Email alerts tied to your zip code. Soft launch on this is next.
